Assistant Attorney General – Appellate and Complex Litigation
The Vermont Attorney General’s Office has an immediate opening for a full-time assistant attorney general to perform appellate and complex litigation work in its Appellate Unit. The successful candidate may brief and argue significant appeals on behalf of the State of Vermont before the Vermont Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and potentially the U.S. Supreme Court; assist with the unit’s supervision of all the Office’s appellate litigation; and assist with complex trial litigation. The Assistant Attorney General may also provide advice on the constitutionality of proposed legislation and other state actions, assist in the Office’s affirmative, impact litigation in the federal courts, review requests to join multi-state litigation and amicus curiae briefs across the country, and perform other projects as assigned by the Solicitor General. The position is located at the Attorney General’s Office at 109 State Street in Montpelier, Vermont, but requires occasional travel throughout the state.
The successful candidate must be a member in good standing of the Vermont bar or be eligible to obtain admission by waiver. The candidate should have excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills; a strong interest in and familiarity with constitutional law; and a willingness to work on a wide variety of subject matters. Prior appellate experience, including clerkship experience, is strongly preferred, and candidates should have experience working on complex (and preferably federal) litigation.
This is an exempt, full-time position. Salary and benefits will be based upon qualifications and experience in accordance with the State of Vermont Attorney Pay Plan.
