Assistant Attorney General Position
Director, Human Services Legal Unit
The Vermont Office of the Attorney General, Agency of Human Services Legal Unit, has an immediate opening for an energetic and talented full-time Assistant Attorney General to serve as AHS Legal Director. The Legal Director will be responsible for providing litigation support and direct supervision of four legal units within the Human Services Legal Division.
The Human Services Legal Unit supports the following within the Vermont Agency for Human Services: the Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living; the Department of Vermont Health Access; the Department of Health; and the Department for Children and Families, Economic Services Division.
The Legal Director is responsible for personnel management of approximately eight Assistant Attorneys General and a paralegal who provide direct support to these Departments. In addition, the Legal Director will serve as liaison between the Attorney General’s Office and the leadership of the supported Departments and provide legal advice and support to the Secretary of the Agency of Human Services and her executive management team. The Legal Director reports to the Chief of the AHS Legal Division.
Located in Waterbury, Vermont, the Legal Director will also be responsible for supporting and managing litigation in Vermont Civil and Probate Courts, and administrative hearings before the Vermont Human Services Board.
Preference will be given to candidates with management experience. Candidates should have at least five years of legal experience, excellent oral and written communication skills and be capable of working as part of a team. Candidates must be willing to travel and work independently, but within the structure of a government legal team. Self-reliance, IT skills, and knowledge of state and federal regulations related to the authorities of the listed agencies will be favorably considered. Candidates must be a member in good standing of the Vermont bar, or eligible to waive in.
This assistant attorney general position is an exempt full-time position. Salary and benefits will be based upon qualifications and experience in accordance with the Attorney Pay Plan.
