Labor Relations and Human Resources Consultant
Downs Rachlin Martin PLLC (DRM) – one of Northern New England’s largest law firms – has an opportunity for a Labor Relations and Human Resources Consultant to join our Labor & Employment team in its Burlington, Vermont office.
This position functions as a key member of a team. The team’s objective is to facilitate effective, pro-active labor relations and human resources solutions for clients. We thrive on solving difficult problems in a challenging environment. The keys to our success are building relationships, establishing appropriate and respectful boundaries, and keeping the focus on the big picture objectives. Client service is paramount. The successful candidate will have at least 5 years of progressive HR experience, with experience in a unionized environment. SHRM and/or HRCI certification is a plus.

Specific Expectations:
- Ability to function independently at client’s premises, and in conjunction with DRM team members, including regular meetings and communication with the DRM team
- Understand and support the client’s business operations and their strategic objectives
- Conduct regular meetings with the client’s management team
- Conduct regular meetings with union representatives
- Mentor and support client HR re: effective labor relations
- Coach supervisors and managers on effective employment practices
- Coach supervisors and managers on their rights and responsibilities within a unionized environment.
- Review daily employee issues and provide advice on CBA compliance
- Provide advice on discipline and corrective action
- Review and respond to union information requests
- Review and facilitate the grievance process
- Establish and maintain an effective labor relations information system (LRIS)
- Provide routine updates to client
- Provide human resources guidance and support to management
- Serve as a coach for management development
- Provide advice on leave of absence policies and administration
- Provide any other service reasonably requested by client
General Objectives:
- Be open to the different labor relations and human resources philosophies, with the ability to adapt and implement them based on the client’s needs
- Be entrepreneurial; explore and develop expertise within this field
- Develop a solid working knowledge of the philosophy and practices of the unions involved with our clients
