The Vermont Judiciary Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion was established to identify disparities in our justice system, understand the causes, evaluate solutions, and implement changes. The Commission’s work will address disparities amongst individuals involved in court proceedings as well as internal Judiciary practices, such as hiring, training, and retention.
The Commission, which consists of stakeholders from the judiciary, advocacy organizations, government, and the VBA (represented by past VBA president Robert Fletcher), has planned a series of Community Forums to elicit public input on the topic. Three forums have already been held in different parts of the state. The next will take place on Thursday, March 9, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.at the Windsor Criminal and Family Courthouse at 82 Railroad Row in White River Junction. An American sign language interpreter will be present and remote participation via Webex is available. The next forum after that will convene on Thursday, March 16, 2023 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Rutland Civil and Probate Courthouse 83 Center Street, Rutland, VT 05701 with the same accessibility arrangements.
